Better ways of gifting at Easter

Posted by The Wares Team on 31st Mar 2023

What's not to love about Easter, with its promise of spring and new life, pretty pastel decorations, Sunday lunch with the family and... oh, let's not forget the chocolate!

Easter is a big gifting occasion, but it's also a big producer of non-recyclable waste. Just think about all of that plastic in commercial easter egg and chocolate boxes, as well as colourful foil wrap, which can't always be recycled. Suddenly that lovely occasion is in danger of harming the environment, which is the last thing that we want to do as environmentally conscious consumers.

The good news is that you can easily find better ways to gift beautiful and thoughtful treats at Easter by using more sustainable options. Perhaps the most obvious for those Easter gift ideas are glass, wicker and cardboard. Let's look at how you can create beautiful and sustainable Easter chocolate gifts and other gifts for Easter 2023.

Ideas for gifting Easter Eggs

Perhaps one of the easiest - and prettiest - Easter craft ideas is to fill small glass jars or bottles with colourful pastel mini-eggs or colourful foil-wrapped eggs. Add a beautiful gift tag and a pink velvet bow and your gift will look beautiful as a table setting, or for children. Even better, the glass jars and bottles can be reused and cause no damage to the environment. Here are some other ideas:

- Looking for easy Easier craft ideas? Use craft card and googly eyes to turn mini glass jars into chicks or bunnies with some creative cutting and glueing. Children would love this as a weekend project, and the finished items would make lovely decorations.

- Fill mini glass jars or bottles with tiny sweets and then glue a decorative chick nest and Easter chicks onto the lid.

- Invest in one of our lovely wicker hampers and fill it with fun mini cereals, baking chocolate and character decorations so that children can make Easter nests. You can see our wicker hamper range here: https://www.waresofknutsford.co.uk/wickerware/

- Fill mini glass bottles with indulgent, homemade chocolate milkshakes, which you can make by melting real chocolate in warm milk. Tie a reusable metal straw to the bottle with a ribbon, and perhaps add a little bag of marshmallow sprinkles.

- Fill tiny glass jars with your own sparkling candles, using soy wax, biodegradable glitter, rose essential oil and pink food dye for a lovely colour.

- Easter decorating ideas should include your dining table, so why not fill a large glass jar with coloured water and floating candles for a stunning illuminated display, or invest in a confectionary jar and layer up homemade cookies with colourful smarties or chocolate chunks? Glass jars also look fantastic filled with pastel-coloured peppermint candies which are extremely easy to make with water, sugar, peppermint flavouring and a little food colouring.

Easter cake in a jar

Looking for Easter baking ideas? You could also use a large glass jar to gift an Easter cake mix, ready for making. Even better, once the cake is made, the glass jar can be used in the kitchen to store pantry items. This Easter Cake from the BBC is a beautiful orange-flavour cake covered in cream cheese icing and dotted with mini chocolate eggs. It's a bundt cake that is fun to make with young bakers, and you'll need a bundt cake tin with a capacity of 2.5 litres or more. The full recipe includes oranges, cream cheese, chocolate mini eggs and regular baking ingredients, and you'll find it on the BBC at: https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/mini-egg-cake.

To make this into a gift, simply sift and prepare the dry ingredients into a glass jar, or layer the flour, caster sugar and baking powder before adding a generous layer of chocolate eggs. If you wish, for added colour, you could add sprinkles to the dry mix. Add the instructions to a hand-written tag. This is a great cake because it's very easy to make and simply requires mixing, spooning and then baking - before icing and decorating! There are plenty of Easter cake ideas on the BBC site, including small chocolate fudge Easter cakes which would look fantastic gifted in a hamper or cardboard box with recyclable paper shred: https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/chocolate-fudge-easter-cakes.
