Using glass bottles for interior design

Posted by The Wares Team on 6th Sep 2022

When you flick through any kind of interior magazine or watch a design show, you'll invariably see glass bottles being used creatively to add a decorative touch to decor - perhaps large and standing in hallways, small and grouped on shelves, colourful and placed along windowsills or filled with bath salts and used in the bathroom.

Glassware is so simple to use in a decorative way because it naturally looks good anyway, and it's also available in so many different colours, shapes and designs. You can use these features to style your home in exactly the way you want, to bring light, shape and colour into different rooms and also to hold and store things in an attractive way. Consider, for example, how beautiful a pantry lined with glass Mason jars looks, compared to plastic tubs. Or how perfectly vintage glassware works displayed in a country kitchen?

But glassware works really well for modern homes too, especially with simple lines or bold, striking shapes. The key to success lies in having a creative approach and trying different things. The good news is that glass needn't be expensive. In fact, some of the most successful home designs are made simply by using classic kitchen glass bottles and jars, and then by applying colourful contents, labels, lids and decoration.

Looking for some ideas to inspire you? Here are some to try:

In the bathroom

Create a coastal feel with blue glass and quirky shapes, particularly if you can find holiday souvenirs that double up as happy memories for your space. A bathroom is also a great place for storing pretty bath crystals and salts. Why not make your own colour-themed bath salts with Epsom Salts, natural food dyes and essential oils and then store them in glass bottles alongside the bath? A large oversize glass bottle also makes a fantastic decanter for your favourite bath foam and will look much better than a plastic bottle. If you're loving the glass feel, then try storing cotton pads in a large confectionary-style glass jar too, as these look really spa-like.

In the kitchen

The kitchen absolutely calls out for glassware! Buy matching bottles and jars and use them to store everything from spices to pasta. A row of colourful spices in small bottles will look gorgeous on display and your pantry will be social media-worthy if you swap out packets and tubs for smart glassware with hand-written labels. Nothing looks cuter than large confectionary jars filled with homemade cookies or treats. You could also display your homemade jams and conserves along a Welsh dresser or shelf, as these will look really beautiful with their rich jewel colours. And for a high shelf, display your fermenting products and raspberry gins; again for their wonderful colour and beautiful appearance.

In the living area

Glassware looks wonderful when it's placed along a windowsill to catch the light. Look for colourful vases, bottles and jars and line them up so they can catch the daylight and bring a colourful glow into your room. Fill glass bottles with artificial flowers or grasses for a structural, beautiful accessory that you can easily change with the seasons. You can also spray glass in colours to suit your decor and use them either as tealight holders or simply as small vases. Look out for sparkly sprays that are really on-trend!

In the hallway

If your hallway is a little dark, then why not fill a large glass bottle with some fairy lights so that they sparkle as you come home? This trick also works beautifully in an empty fire hearth as it creates a warm glow without needing to light a fire.

In the dining area

Be creative with your glassware and look for things to fill your glass bottle to create something beautiful at meal times. Striking pebbles and sand can be used in a large fishbowl glass jar or bottle to make a terrarium, for example. You can also group glass bottles to make informal vases for floral or evergreen bouquets, or use narrow topped bottles to hold candles for an atmospheric feel.
