Ideas for making your own wedding favours

Posted by The Wares Team on 26th May 2022

At Wares of Knutsford, we've already seen a big shift towards 'make your own' when it comes to weddings. And that makes sense - not just from the cost perspective. Yes, the costs of hosting the perfect event are certainly rising and couples are keen to keep their budgets in check, but our customers also tell us that they want to make their big day as personal and special as possible.

The rise of social media means that couples can now find plenty of inspiration for the style, theme and colours of their wedding and a big part of creating this lookbook is to go for consistent favours and gifts. Rustic and country-themed, boho and vintage weddings are still all huge trends and they allow couples to really place their own stamp on their wedding day.

It's really easy to make beautiful wedding favours too - and a lot of fun. After all, where's the enjoyment in paying someone to turn up with something you only briefly see on the day that feels impersonal to your guests. Far lovelier to make something with your own hands. And it doesn't have to be time-consuming or difficult.

Some easy ideas for wedding favours

Small glass jars are the perfect choice for storing and presenting your wedding favours. We sell a wide range of small glass bottles and miniature jars to suit all sizes, tastes and budgets and you can fill them with all sorts of wonderful things. For example:

- Fill up miniature bottles with homemade raspberry gin or your choice of liqueur. We're big fans of homemade chocolate liqueur, where you mix together sugar, cocoa, cream and milk in a pan and heat it gently to make a luxurious hot chocolate drink, before allowing it to cool again and refrigerating with plenty of vodka. It's a wonderfully decadent and Italian-inspired after-dinner treat that would go wonderfully with homemade biscotti.

- Use miniature jars to create your own scented soy wax candles. Melt your wax discs and add a little food colouring and essential oil to suit the theme of your wedding. Perhaps a soft pink and rose scent for a late spring event, or orange with citrus and bergamot for a Summer do. Add your tapers, let the wax set and maybe sprinkle a little glitter over the top just before the wax finishes its hardening process. Add a little ribbon and note and you've got a beautiful favour that is all your own work.

- Fill small glass jars with pretty coloured bath salts. Again, you can make your own with Epsom salts, food dyes and essential oils and layer them up to create a magical rainbow effect. Perfect for a post-wedding bath.

- Fill small glass bottles with tiny coloured sweets to delight children - or maybe fill them with wildflower seeds for your guests to scatter where they live. This would be a lovely eco-friendly gift. In a similar way, you could offer little jars with birdseed in if your family and friends are big fans of nature. Even simple contents look wonderful when you add a handwritten thank you label and a pretty ribbon.

- Why not create a range of colourful liqueurs so you can have a jewel effect of favours on your wedding table. How about blood orange liqueur, bright raspberry gin, limoncello, chocolate or coffee liqueur and Irish cream? You can run the colour spectrum and have a lot of fun making your delicious drinks for the day. You really just need basic ingredients and a few weeks to let the flavours combine. You could even try a lime, mint and basil vodka infusion for a bright green drink.

- A message in a bottle could be fun to make. Simply write beautiful handmade notes in your best gold pen and script and roll them up in a small glass bottle, perhaps with some kind of little keepsake. This would be a very personal gift.
