Enamel wares for the vintage kitchen

Posted by The Wares Team on 29th Jun 2021

Is there anything prettier than a vintage kitchen? Certainly, it's a trend that many of us are embracing and it's a beautifully classic look that can easily be individualised with your own personal touches and creative flair.

The beauty and versatility of enamel

One of the best materials for creating that authentic-looking vintage kitchen is enamel. Enamel is the material that our grandmas grew up and it has remained popular ever since for its hard-wearing nature, versatility and attractive finish. You can find enamelwares of all kinds, from pretty mugs and bread bins to an enamel tea pot. The great thing about this material is that it's hard-wearing and won't damage when it's accidentally broken, making it ideal for children too - and camping trips!

It's also 100% safe for food cooking and doesn't react to food acids. However, it isn't suitable for the microwave. You can use it on a gas, electric or induction stove, in the oven, in the freezer and fridge and also over the bonfire! Some staining may occur from coffee, tea and dark coloured foods, but this is natural.

Falcon iconic British enamelware

This iconic British enamelware brand has been highly popular for decades, but we are seeing demand for Falcon enamelwares surging now with the trend towards period living and vintage style. The good news is that we have added some fantastic new products to our line that you are sure to love.

A pretty floral enamel mug

This pretty and traditional enamel mug has a daisy design for an attractive and authentic vintage finish. It's the perfect size for a hot cuppa or chilled cordial and has a contrasting black trim against the white mug. See it here: https://www.waresofknutsford.co.uk/enamel-mug-with-daisy-overprint/

Retro styling for added vintage points

Double up on your vintage with this Felicity enamel mug with its retro floral overlay pattern. It's 8cm in diameter and looks absolutely lovely on a display shelf - and in your hands with your morning coffee of course! Fresh and light garden scenes

Or try this incredibly pretty retro enamel mug with pale green jardiniere scenes and lilac butterflies. Again, a set of these would make a fantastic accessory to your kitchen, perhaps hung from a Welsh dresser or a shelf. You'll notice slight variations in appearance in our enamel mugs. This is because they are made using artisan techniques in small batches, which preserves their finish and brings warmth, artistry and character into each piece. The ceramic decal designs are applied directly to the enamel surface before being fired in a kiln. This bakes the designs into the surface so that they can't peel before a final clear coating is applied.

Looking after enamel

Enamel products are also ideal for outdoor adventures and camping because the material is durable, easy to clean and colour-fast. So that enamel tea pot and cup set is also worth packing into your picnic basket!

However, it isn't entirely shatterproof or chip-proof as it's actually derived from glass. Enamelware is made by coating steel or cast iron with a thin layer of powdered glass, which is then fired in a kiln. The coating helps to avoid rust and ensures that heat is distributed evenly across the surface. This means it's worth caring for your enamelware carefully so that it lasts for years.

You can look after enamel by washing it gently with warm water and gentle dish soap, and by keeping it away from harsh detergents, vinegar or abrasive materials. Enamelware is also suitable for the dishwasher, but just make sure each item is well-spaced so that it doesn't get bumped and chip. Do dry each item well after cleaning, as corrosion can occur over time if there are slight chips and water gets into them.

Rescuing chipped enamel

If your enamelware does get chipped, do what your granny would have done and make use of it in different ways! A slightly chipped enamel pot or cup will still look lovely on a display or used as an impromptu vase.
