Zam Zam is the purest form of water, but its history and culture go far beyond health benefits. This holy water is revered in Islam and is often incorporated into celebrations such as weddings. Let's take a closer look:

What is Zamzam water?

Muslims believe that this pure water, from the well situated in Saudi Arabia's holy site of Mecca, is blessed. In fact, the well itself is located just a few metres away from Islam's holiest site, the Al-Kaaba, and the water is mentioned in ancient religious texts.

In the original text, Allah ordered the Prophet Ibraham to take his wife and son to Makkah, barren at the time. When their food and water ran out, his young son, Ismail, started to cry with thirst, so his mother, Hagar ran up and down the hills of Marwa and Sara seven times. Ismail began to fret and cry and kicked the ground, and water began to flow from this spot. Hagar collected the water and fed it to Ismail, and the flowing water became the flowing and blessed well so revered today.

Since then, prophets and religious leaders have described the water as having near miraculous properties when it comes to healing sickness and helping to tackle hunger. It is incredibly pure and free from bacteria and is believed to:

- Help cure hunger pangs

- Ease eyesight problems and eye conditions

- Reduce acidity in the body

- Strengthen the teeth

- Help to repair the skin

- and, fortify the immune system.

Some pilgrims use it to fortify themselves during periods of delicious fasting, and Muslims believe that Zam Zam water is more than just hydration and a source of blessed and nourishing food.

What science has discovered about Zam Zam water

Interestingly, science has also found that this wonder water has incredible properties. In fact, it's the purest water on earth thanks to its high bicarbonate and mineral content which is very beneficial to humans. The well is thirty metres deep and many of the layers of the surrounding ground are composed of igneous rock or packed sediment. The water has a particular taste, but no smell or colour and it is particularly high in essential magnesium and calcium.

How people use the water

As part of their pilgrimages, many Muslims travel to Makkah and support their journey with the water. They store it in jars and containers and take it back home with them, where it's an important and revered gift for friends and family. During Hajj, pilgrims also use the water to wash and drink it.
