What Size Lid Do I Need for My Jam Jar?
Posted by The Wares Team on 28th Sep 2026
Quick answer: The correct lid is determined by the jar's neck finish, not its capacity. Check the product specification or original packaging first. If you need to measure, measure straight across the outside of the jar opening in millimetres and match it to a compatible twist-off lid from the same system.

Why Capacity Is Not Enough
Two jars can hold the same volume and use different lids because their necks and shoulders are designed differently. The reverse is also true: jars with different capacities can share a lid size. Our' 228ml jam jar and 370ml jam jar both use a 63mm closure, so choosing by capacity alone can easily lead to the wrong lid.

How to Measure a Jar Opening
- Remove the lid and make sure the rim is clean and undamaged.
- Measure straight across the outside of the neck at its widest point, passing through the centre.
- Measure in millimetres. Do not measure around the circumference or across the body of the jar.
- Compare the result with the jar specification and the compatibility information on the lid product page.
- If the measurement falls between standard sizes, identify the jar or ask the supplier rather than forcing the nearest lid.
Diameter Alone Does Not Guarantee Compatibility
A matching diameter is essential, but the thread or lug pattern must also suit the jar. A 63mm lid designed for one closure system should not be assumed to fit every jar that measures roughly 63mm. This matters most when jars and lids come from different suppliers or when the original jar cannot be identified.
Standard Twist Off and Button Lids
Both styles use an internal sealing compound to meet the jar rim. A standard twist-off lid provides a secure closure when applied and processed correctly. A button lid adds a raised centre that can be drawn down when a vacuum forms after hot filling or processing.
The button is a useful seal indicator, but it does not prove that the recipe or preservation process was safe. Honey is normally filled at a lower temperature than jam, so a button may not pull down as strongly even when the closure is secure.
When Buying Replacement Lids
- Match the stated lid size and closure system to the jar.
- Use food-contact lids suited to the product, including an appropriate lining for acidic or vinegar-based foods.
- Inspect every lid for dents, rust, scratches or damage to the sealing compound.
- For products intended for long-term storage, use a new lid unless the manufacturer expressly says it is reusable for that purpose.
