How is glass recycled?

Recycling glass is very important for both environmental and financial reasons, this is because glass jars and bottles are made from crushed glass which requires less energy than that made from using other materials such as plastic. Recycling glass helps conserve the environment, saving raw materials from being sand mined or quarried unnecessarily. You can recycle glass time and time again and the quality will never be affected! It is very important to make sure you’re recycling all your glass jars and bottles. The glass jars and bottles are broken down into tiny pieces, contaminants are removed, and they then get processed back into recycled products!

Where do you recycle glass jars?

The recycling process starts at home, you need to make sure everything inside the product which isn’t made from glass is removed and to make sure the product is thoroughly cleaned. Next, you need to organise the glass by colour so there is no mixing of coloured glass products. All coloured glass gets recycled dependent on the colour, but they all follow the same basic process.

Finally, you need to find a local recycling bank, recycling centre or a kerbside collection service which can then get your products recycled and to be used again!

Can you recycle jar lids?

You can recycle your jam jar lids, but you need to make sure to remove the lids off the jam jar lids and recycle them separately.

Are our glass products recycled?

Majority of our glass jars and bottles are made out of recycled glass, you can tell more with some products when it has a green tinge to the colour, this is because it has more of a percentage of recycled glass in compared to others, so next time you have a glass jar which looks green in the light, just know that it is made up of a high percentage of recycled glass!

Linked below is a very interesting video from Beatson Clark, a British manufacturer, explaining how they produce glass jars and bottles made from recycled glass. A lot of our glass jars are British made, including 1lb jam, 8oz jam, all of the deluxe food range, 12oz jam and more!

Did you know…

Recycling six tons of container glass can reduce the amount of carbon dioxide produced by up to one ton!
