End of summer recipe using glass jars and bottles

Posted by The Wares Team on 18th Aug 2023

The end of summer is upon us and we're nearly in the 'ember' months! Where did it go? But even though we might have mixed feelings about the nights drawing in, there's still so much to do and enjoy in the kitchen. For example, if you've had a Grow Your Own project in the garden, you may still have fruits and vegetables to use up. Similarly, you may have been foraging and stocked up on late August blackberries, or you may already have apples falling off the trees and in need of use.

With seasonal fruit in abundance, it's vital to use everything up as much as possible and avoid wasting food. At Wares of Knutsford, we're passionate about protecting the environment, and this means reducing our waste as much as possible. So it's also a great time to grab a glass jam jar or two and try a new recipe!

Glass jam jar recipes are fun and environmentally friendly because they give you a chance to use up your seasonal fruit and vegetables, make use of cost-effective, natural and chemical-free glass jars and bottles, and also enable you to meal prep. After all, what could be more appealing than a bircher muesli made overnight in a chilled glass jar, ready to enjoy for your late morning breakfast the next day?

An easy recipe for a glass jam jar

These jam jar trifles are delicious, easy to make and also a great way to use up the last of your seasonal berries. This recipe is on the BBC Good Food website, and it explains how to make your own custard, but you could also buy a ready-made custard and use ready-made Madeira cake in slices. The recipe may be a classic, but it's basically a layering of sweet cake, traditional custard, freshly-whipped cream and fruity berries. It will store nicely in the fridge overnight, and it's a real crowd pleaser. Find the recipe here: https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/jam-jar-trifles

Other easy ideas for your glass jars

Glass jars for fruit look lovely, and they're great for food prep too. Simply chop your fresh fruit into cubes or chunks, toss in a little lemon juice and then layer up in your glass jar with Greek yoghurt. Top with some muesli, toasted almonds and a drizzle of honey for a ready meal on the go.

- Melt high-cacao chocolate in a pan and whisk in thick cream and a knob of butter as it cools. Add a little sweetener to taste. Use it to fill small glass jars, and you'll have a ready dessert and a delicious treat at any time - ideal for storing in the fridge.

- Put grated carrot and courgette from your garden patch into the food processor with a little light oil, greek yoghurt or pesto. Throw in some herbs, blend it all up and create your own delicious dip. You can experiment here with additions such as soft cheese or olives to find a combination that really appeals to you. Use it as a dip for crudites or whizz up some homemade fries in the air fryer.

- Make your favourite salad by layering up salad vegetables, cubed cheese or meat, seeds and nuts, rice or pasta and then make a second mini glass jar with your favourite dressing in it to pour over the top when you're ready to serve. You can also begin layering the salad by putting your dressing at the bottom and the food on top, and simply invert it to spread the dressing throughout your delicious salad. Healthy, fast, nutritious and economical - everything we love!

- You could even try some chilled soups for your glass jars. Why not try blending tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, garlic and a handful of fresh herbs to make the Spanish favourite; gazpacho? Once blended, add plenty of salt and pepper, a swirl of olive oil and then some protein if you wish, such as some chickpeas, chopped hard-boiled egg or even some cold meat. It's a really healthy, delicious lunch for enjoying on the go.
