What Size Honey Jar Should I Use?

What Size Honey Jar Should I Use?

Posted by The Wares Team on 1st Oct 2026

Quick answer: Choose a honey jar by the net weight you intend to sell, then select a jar that we specify for that weight. In the current range, the 190ml hexagonal jar is sold as an 8oz honey jar, the 280ml hexagonal jar as a 12oz or 340g jar, and the 353ml round jar as a 1lb or 454g jar.

Why Millilitres and Grams Are Not Interchangeable

Millilitres describe the jar's volume; grams and ounces describe the weight of honey. Honey is denser than water, and its exact density varies with moisture content and temperature. A generic 370ml liquid jar should therefore not automatically be described as a 1lb honey jar.

Use the weight stated for the dedicated honey jar, then confirm your own fill by weighing test jars on calibrated scales. Allow for the empty jar, your chosen fill line and any production tolerance required by your process.

Which Size Suits Your Customer

8oz Honey Jars

An 8oz format lowers the purchase price and works well for gifts, mixed-variety packs and customers trying a honey for the first time. The 190ml hexagonal jar provides flat faces for a compact front label and a distinctive shelf shape.

12oz or 340g Honey Jars

The 280ml hexagonal jar sits between a small taster and a full 1lb jar. It suits producers who want a generous retail portion with a premium shape and uses a 63mm lid.

1lb or 454g Honey Jars

The 353ml honey jar is designed around the familiar 1lb format and uses a 70mm lid. It is a strong core size for regular customers, farm shops and larger retail orders because the weight is immediately recognisable. The 1LB Screw Honey Jar features a secure screw lid and is a popular competition jar for honey competitions, including those held at the prestigious National Honey Show.

Round or Hexagonal

Round jars provide a traditional profile and are easy to standardise across larger runs. Hexagonal jars create clear label panels and a more distinctive presentation. Neither shape improves the honey itself, so the decision should be based on brand appearance, label design, case packing and cost per filled unit.

Test Before You Order in Volume

  • Fill and weigh several jars using the honey at your normal packing temperature.
  • Test the closed jar upright and on its side before committing to postal packaging.
  • Confirm the lid specification, pack quantity and pallet quantity on the live product page.
