Why We Love Weck Jars at Wares of Knutsford

At Wares of Knutsford, glass jars and bottles are at the heart of what we do. Whether you’re preserving homemade jam, bottling craft drinks, storing pantry staples, or preparing gifts, glass packaging offers a timeless and sustainable solution. Our customers use jars for everything from chutneys and pickles to candles, dry food storage and creative projects.

Among the many styles we supply, one range continues to stand out for both its heritage and its quality: the iconic Weck glass jars.

A Favourite Among Preservers and Home Cooks

The Weck range is loved by food makers, home preservers and professional kitchens alike. Their distinctive design – with a glass lid, rubber seal and metal clips – has been trusted for generations.

Unlike standard jars with screw lids, Weck jars use a traditional preserving system that is both beautifully simple and extremely reliable. This makes them perfect for anyone serious about preserving, fermenting or presenting food in style.

At Wares of Knutsford we’re proud to offer a range of jars and bottles to suit every project, and the Weck range is a wonderful example of glass packaging done properly.

Why Do Weck Jars Have Clips and a Rubber Seal?

One of the first things people notice about Weck jars is their unusual lid system.

Instead of a metal lid that screws onto the jar, they use three simple components:

  • A glass lid

  • A natural rubber seal

  • Metal retaining clips

This clever system creates a vacuum seal during the preserving process.

How it works

  1. The rubber seal sits between the jar and the glass lid.

  2. The metal clips hold everything tightly together during heating or preserving.

  3. As the contents cool, a vacuum forms inside the jar.

  4. The vacuum pulls the lid down, creating an airtight seal.

Once the jar has cooled, the clips can actually be removed. If the lid stays sealed, you know the vacuum has worked correctly.

It’s a beautifully simple design that has stood the test of time.

Glass jars are incredibly versatile, and their durability means they can last for years when treated with care.
