A Guide to Different Types of Glass Bottles and Their Uses

Posted by The Wares Team on 17th Jun 2025

At Wares of Knutsford, we're all about glass bottles and jars! With thousands of products to choose from, we know our customers sometimes value some guidance when it comes to the different categories of glass jars and bottles and their various creative uses.

With that in mind, let's take a look at the various types of glass bottles we sell and common ways they can be used in your home and business.

Clear Glass Jars and Bottles

Glass bottles have been used worldwide for centuries, but it wasn't until the late 1800s that their production became widespread, as automatic bottling machines came into play, and technologies evolved to allow truly clear glass to be manufactured consistently and at scale. Today, you'll find clear glass bottles sold for every purpose, with a wide variety of brands having their own distinctive styles, caps and purposes. For example, at Wares of Kntusford, you'll find everything from glass milk bottles to the wonderfully-named heavyweight Honorius Nocturne Glass bottles and Faceted Costolata Swing Stopper Glass Bottles for cordials. There really is something for everyone and every purpose in this wide category.

Green Glass Bottles

Early examples of green glass bottles date back to the 17th century, and today they are still used heavily for wine, beer and some food products, such as sauces. Green glass is produced by incorporating additives such as copper, iron or chromium oxide into the manufacturing process. Green glass looks beautiful, and it's ideal for products that require moderate protection from light. Certainly, we might always associate green glass with wine and beer bottles, because the UV protection keeps the flavour of these products true. See our Bordeaux green glass bottles and Dorica green oil bottles for examples of green glass bottles with slightly different colour hues.

Amber Jars and Bottles

Amber glass bottles and cosmetic jars have been produced commercially for hundreds of years, and they were particularly common from the 18th century to the mid-20th century. The amber glass is made by adding sulphur and nickel or by making use of natural glass impurities. We might associate amber glass bottles and jars with aromatherapy products, medicines and tinctures, and herb-infused oils. This is because the amber glass helps protect the bottle contents against UV light and acts as a natural preservative. Amber glass bottles also look beautiful, and they're very popular with our commercial buyers. Check out our wonderful Sirop Alpha bottles, Apo Vichy glass beer bottles, and large Winchester cosmetic bottles for some great examples.

Blue Glass Bottles

In our aromatherapy and pharmacy glass bottles collection, you'll find a beautiful range of blue bottles. These are also excellent for UV protection and to preserve delicate or unstable products. Cobalt blue glass has been produced in Europe since the 16th Century, but archaeological digs have found ancient Mesopotamian blue glass bottles dating back to around 2000 BC! Blue glass bottles were traditionally used for ink, mineral water and soda, and today they are used for light-reactive products, such as fragile essential oils, which can be easily damaged by UV light. They are also popular with some spirit makers, and the blue glass looks absolutely beautiful. See our lovely miniature blue glass bottles, which are very popular with our commercial beauty customers.

And Even... A Black Bottle!

We also have a new range of miniature black bottles, which really are unusual! These almost-opaque glass bottles are ideal for storing fragrance and essential oils, and they look really striking. They're certainly getting attention with our artisan beauty customers.
