Can You Reuse Jam Jars and Lids?
Posted by The Wares Team on 19th Oct 2026
Quick answer: Purpose-made preserving jars can often be reused as long as the glass is free from chips, cracks and damage. For long-term shelf-stable preserves, use a new compatible lid everytime. Old lids remain useful for dry storage or short-term refrigerated food when the closure is clean and sound.

When a Glass Jar Can Be Reused?
Reuse jars that were designed for preserving and remain in good condition. Wash them thoroughly, inspect them in bright light and prepare & sterilise them again using the method required by the recipe. Retire any jar with damage around the rim, because the lid needs a smooth, continuous surface to seal.
Do not assume that every shop-bought jar can withstand repeated heating or a water-bath process. If the original jar was not sold as a reusable preserving jar, check the manufacturer's information before exposing it to heat again.
How to Inspect a Jar
- Look for cracks in the body, base and shoulder.
- Run a finger carefully around the rim to find small chips or rough areas.
- Check that the neck and thread or lug finish are not damaged.
- Reject glass with deep scratches, impact damage or unexplained stress marks.
- Confirm that the jar still matches an available, compatible lid.
A damaged jar can be repurposed for non-food or dry storage if it is safe to handle, but it should not be used for a hot-filled or shelf-stable preserve.
Why New Lids Are the Safer Default?
A metal preserving lid relies on the sealing compound beneath it. After a lid has been heated, compressed and opened, the compound may be flattened or damaged even if the metal still looks acceptable. A reused lid can close but fail to form or maintain a reliable vacuum.
For jam, chutney, pickles and other products intended for long-term storage, the small saving is not worth risking the ingredients and work in the batch. Fit a new, compatible lid and keep the old one for a use that does not depend on a vacuum seal.
When an Old Lid May Still Be Useful?
- Dry ingredients that do not depend on an airtight preserving seal.
- Craft materials, seeds, buttons and household storage.
- Short-term refrigerated food, provided the lid is clean, rust-free and undamaged.
- Temporary covers during preparation, away from direct food contact where appropriate.
Do Not Reuse a Lid If:
- It is dented, bent, rusty or scratched on the sealing surface.
- The sealing compound is compressed, split, stained or missing.
- It does not turn smoothly onto the jar or feels cross-threaded.
- Its previous contents or condition make hygienic cleaning uncertain.
- You need a dependable vacuum seal for room-temperature storage.
Keep the Jar and Lid Specification Together
When you buy jars, record the product code, capacity and lid size. Our 228ml and a 370ml jam jars can both use a 63mm lid, while a 353ml 1lb honey jar uses 70mm. Labelling storage boxes with the jar and closure details makes later reordering much easier.
