Stock up on glass jars now

Posted by The Wares Team on 22nd Jul 2022

If you've spent time growing your own fruit and vegetables over the past months, you're probably gearing up for a glut!

Why choose glass jars?

There are so many benefits to choosing glass jars over plastic alternatives. For example:

- Glass is extremely environmentally friendly because it can be recycled time and time again

- It's surprisingly durable too!

- Glass is free from contaminants, so you can store food in it safely without any effect on its composition, colour, taste or smell

- Glass is a natural product and beautiful to look at

- You can buy glass in a variety of colours to suit your contents and in a huge range of sizes and styles.

Compare this to plastic which is often single-use, filled with chemicals that can leach into your contents and are generally destructive to the planet. It's no surprise that we are seeing such a huge increase in glass purchases at Wares of Knutsford! And with that in mind, we are constantly investing in our glassware so that our customers can find the perfect product in every size, style and quantity to suit their needs.

It's not too late! What to plant in the garden now

Best vegetables for small spaces

You don't need a big garden to grow your own. For example, cherry tumbling tomatoes are wonderful in hanging baskets and flower boxes, cucumbers can be grown on windowsills and herbs, chilis and salad leaves can be grown in any sunny spot such as a windowsill or balcony (try hanging pouches which are economical and can be reused). You can even hang pots from macrame holders from ceilings or under shelves to maximise your space.

Try growing small planters with herbs so that you can garnish your dishes as you cook. If you do have a small garden, climbing vegetables can be space-effective. For example, you can train beans up wires or trellised supports that are placed alongside a sunny wall so that you enjoy a crop without needing a large allotment. Carrots can be grown in tubs and smaller vegetables such as spring onions and radishes only need smaller trays.

In terms of fruit, why not try specially grown patio fruit trees which grow upwards rather than outwards. They remain dwarf in size but they can be highly productive and you'll find dwarf apple, pear, cherry and nectarine fruit trees. Strawberries can be grown in hanging baskets, as can some varieties of blackberries. Fruit bushes such as whitecurrants, redcurrants, blueberries and blackcurrants can also be successfully grown in tubs or planters. Just remember to grow blueberries in ericaceous compost and group a couple together to support cross-pollination.

Herbs are certainly worth trying as you only need small planters to get a crop. Some herbs, such as mint, are far better in pots as they can take over the garden otherwise. Consider hanging pocket planters or repurpose a wooden pallet so that you can grow herbs and mini lettuces in an upright position. Some people also recycle rain guttering and secure it to walls so that they can grow lettuces, greens, microgreens and herbs with ease and ensure a continuous supply of fresh young leaves packed with nutrition and flavour.
