Creative Gifts For Mother’s Day

Posted by The Wares Team on 20th Mar 2020

With such extraordinary events happening around the world in recent days, and a rapidly evolving situation, thinking about what to give your Mum for Mother’s Day might seem somehow a little inconsequential in the grand scheme of things. Many of us might be caught up with the practicalities of social distancing and figuring out exactly how working from home is going to pan out.

But in all of this strangeness, it is still important to hold onto some semblance of normality - and this week, that means thinking about Mother’s Day and celebrating in whatever way is appropriate. In today’s blog post, we’re going to take a look at some creative gift ideas that needn’t cost a great deal and some that could even be put together without visiting the shops.

Gift Ideas Using Glass Jars

Our first idea is to go with a rustic and homemade theme and to bring a little of the outside in for this year’s Mother’s Day gift. A simple gift of a big bunch of daffodils in a glass jar is a lovely gesture that will brighten any Mum’s Day and if you have some daffodils in your own garden, there’s no need to go searching in any overcrowded shops for them.

An alternative on this idea is to use pickle jars and to go out to find some decorative twigs - brightly-coloured cornus stems look sensational at this time of the year and willow catkins are out already too. These make brilliant arrangements for pickle jars and other oversized glass jars. Keep the stems long and be generous with the amount that you pick. For maximum effect, more is very definitely more with this idea.

There are plenty of other garden shrubs and spring-flowering bulbs that are already out, so all it takes is a walk around your own garden to find something to fill your shabby chic ‘vase’. And in the complex situation that we find ourselves in, with governmental requests to keep social activities to the minimum, making a gift at home rather than going out shopping for it makes sense. We’re sure that Mums everywhere will appreciate the time and effort you have gone to, in order to bring a little lightness and sunshine into Mother’s Day.

Other Ideas For Glass Jars

If you don’t have access to any flowers or shrubs to make a homemade bouquet, there are plenty of other things you can do to create a simple, but heartfelt gift for this coming Sunday. How about baking some cookies, and filling a pickle jar with them? With a hand-written label and a brightly-coloured ribbon around the neck of the jar, this gift will look every bit as professional as a store-bought version. And if you can bake some cookies or biscuits that your Mum used to make for you when you were a child, so much the better, as there will be a real connection there, with a great talking point for reminiscing about those days.

Fill A Pickle Jar With….Pickles!

If your Mum is of an age where she may need to self-isolate over the coming weeks, it could be a good idea to actually give her a pickled gift. With shopping options restricted, a big jar of pickled onions or pickled eggs could be a real treat, that your Mum can savour over a prolonged period. From eggs and onions to lemons and cabbages, pickling and preserving is just one more way to rustle up a thoughtful and unique gift.

And whilst the autumn is more usually seen as chutney season, you can make chutney with pretty much anything that is in season, so there’s no reason why you can’t make a batch this week, to give to Mum on Mother’s Day. And if you can support your local independent greengrocer by buying any produce there, so much the better.

Craft-Based Gifts

Is your Mum an avid crafter? Does she enjoy cross-stitch, embroidery or crochet? If the answer is yes, then why not put together a bundle of ‘supplies’ and present them in an oversized pickle jar. Glass jars make excellent ‘packaging’ for gifts that have been put together from individual items, as you can see all the lovely goodies inside. Add some upmarket crochet hooks, some yarn and a few interesting buttons to a big jar, and perhaps a paper pattern or two. Before you know it, you’ve made a really lovely present that your Mum will be delighted with. You can tailor this idea to whatever it is that your Mum is interested in.

We hope we’ve given you some good ideas for inexpensive but delightful gifts for your Mum this Sunday. If you have any other ideas for homemade gifts that you plan to make this week, why not share them with us on FacebookInstagram or Twitter. We’d love to see what you’re making, and we’re always impressed with the creativity and imagination of our friends and customers.
